Public accountability is a huge issue in government these days. So, would someone explain to me why the Alberta government is muzzling it's Auditor General by removing funding for the spring report from his budget?
It's hard to claim that the auditor's work isn't necessary - at the Federal level, Sheila Fraser has been astonishingly effective at uncovering issues and putting them in the public forum - even when it is substantially to the detriment of one or more parties.
While Alberta's Auditor General is not "as free" to report on whatever he wants as his Federal counterpart, it's better than nothing.
At the very least, this is horrendous optics for a government that claims to have renewed itself under the leadership of Ed Stelmach.
A progressive voice shining light into the darkness of regressive politics. Pretty much anything will be fair game, and little will be held sacred.
